Tom Littlepage - Galaxyofstores asked:

Infant car seats are designed for the comfort of newborns, and can be used from an infant's birth until the infant reaches a weight of approximately 20 pounds (depending on the model of the car seat). These car seats are designed to be used in a rear facing position, with the infant riding in a lying down position, and with the car seat, itself, secured either by the car's seat belts or a special anchoring system, and the infant secured in the car seat by a harness. This arrangement provides the infant with the best protection while riding in a vehicle. Infant car seats come in a variety of designs, colors, and patterns, and their cost and available features vary by brand and model. Child car seat manufacturers are bound by very strict guidelines, and you may be surprised to find that some of the more expensive car seats don’t provide any better level of protection than those which are more moderately priced.

There are also 'convertible' infant/toddler child car seats available. These car seats can be used for children from infancy (with the car seat in the rear facing position), into their toddler years (with the car seat turned around and used in the forward facing position), until they are ready for a booster car seat. In the rear facing mode, these types of car seats can typically be used with a child up to about 25 lbs, and then used in the forward facing position until the child reaches about 40 lbs. These types of car seats have a larger seat than an infant only car seat, and many come with padded inserts for use when the child is still small.

Whichever type of child car seat is used, the car seat's harness should fit the child snugly, but not too tightly, and the harness straps should be easily adjustable. Many of the newer models feature a 'five point' harness to keep the child secure. The straps should be long enough both to allow room for the bulkier clothing that the child will wear in colder weather, as well as to allow for the child's continuing growth, so that he or she will not outgrow the car seat prematurely.

There are a variety of accessories available for many models of car seats for infants. A common accessory is a head rest for the infant. This is a small inverted U shaped piece that helps keep the infant’s head secure, and prevents him or her from slumping over in the car seat while riding.

Some child car seats have a detachable base that stays in the vehicle, and to which the part of the car seat that the child sits in can be locked. With this type of car seat, the base must be set properly in place before the other piece is locked to it, or the combination will not provide the child with the highest level of protection. Extra bases may be available for purchase to allow the same carrier to be used in multiple vehicles without having to keep shifting the base between the vehicles. Also, some car seats are compatible with strollers, to create a convenient infant travel system.

Report on Infant Car Seats: Pulled Out by Consumer Reports

Correy Putton asked:

Just how common are reports on car and vehicle safety withdrawn and pulled out? Just how common does such happen? We do know that for auto products like perhaps the Ford Explorer or Kia parts, companies could recall and withdraw products if they find something wrong with them. But for reports, it does seem quite strange for a group or a company to recall them.

Well, it might not be that common but it does happen. One very fair and very concrete example of this one would be the report done by Consumer Reports on infant car seats. You see, the group has already sent out the report on the mentioned topic however it did just most recently withdraw it for certain reasons. The withdrawal of the report was done through a press release and public announcement that it sent out to the public. The group says, “Consumer Reports is withdrawing its recent report on infant car seats pending further tests of the performance of those seats in side impact collisions.”

However, for those consumers and customers who really would want to get hold of reports on infant and baby car seats, they need not despair though for Consumer Reports also did say that they would be sending out a new report when they have the needed updated information. “A new report will be published with any necessary revisions as soon as possible after the new tests are complete,” explains Consumer Reports through the press release that they have sent out.

Consumer Reports also did say, “We withdrew the report immediately upon discovering a substantive issue that may have affected the original test results. The issue came to light based on new information received Tuesday night and Wednesday morning from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concerning the speed at which our side-impact tests were conducted.”

Furthermore, the group said that the original report that they did was primarily set out on tackling the discovery of how infant seats did their job during tests that they did. Most of the tests were done in accordance the speeds set out by the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) of the government. Consumer Reports also did try to simulate crashes on the side that vehicles with infant car seats could encounter.

At the end of the public announcement, Consumer Reports did mention for the public, “We appreciate that manufacturers and particularly NHTSA are engaging directly with us on this article, and we applaud NHTSA for giving serious consideration to the development of side-impact child seat tests. Consumer Reports has long advocated adoption of such tests, since government data show that side crashes account for a significant number of child fatalities.”

Finding the Best Infant Car Seat

Levi Quinn asked:

When you think about accessorizing your car, often it will be the cool, exciting things like a new stereo or alloy wheels that come to mind. But for any driver who has kids, the fact is that you are a parent first and foremost, and before anything else in terms of importance comes the infant car seat. You will never make a more important accessory purchase for your car, and there will never be more importance behind getting the right one. With so many on the market, you will have to make sure that the one you buy is suited to your child and – most importantly – safe for them.

As the above paragraph may suggest, it is therefore not a decision that you want to rush. Although it is certainly important to buy a car seat for your child, it is more important that you get it right, even if this takes some time, than doing it quickly. You can congratulate yourself for getting a bargain only when you are certain that it will fit your child. The Internet is a good first stop, after you have measured your child. Take into account the size and weight of your child, because a poorly-fitted car seat will either restrict their movement or fail to hold them – either eventuality can lead to problems.

The ease of installation is another essential consideration. Any parent with experience in the realm of child car seats will tell you that a good car seat never makes its value more pronounced and more evident than when it is pouring with rain, blowing a gale outside and light is at a premium. At such times your child is likely to be crying and you are likely to be tired, and you want the whole process to go quickly and smoothly so you can both get home and you can get your child somewhere warm and cosy with a favorite toy. A technically-advanced wonder seat may offer this many adjustments and that many add-ons, but when you just want to get the darn thing installed, none of this matters.

As well as fitting your child, the seat must also fit your car. This is never more pronounced than when you see the old cliché on television of a young professional learning that they are going to be a parent, and looking out sadly at their two-seat, low slung sports car, which they know they are going to have to trade in for a model which can hold a car seat. Considering your child does not mean you need to buy a boring car, or necessarily that you will even have to change your car at all, but you will be required to take into account the dimensions of your car when buying a child seat for it. There are a good many sites on the Internet where you can check out how well a particular child seat will fit a particular car – the Car Seat Compatibility Database being a particularly sound bet.

And there is, of course, the final check – ask any friends who have become parents what set-up they have chosen and how it works for them. They will not always have the same requirements and speculations to work to as you will, but they will be able to give you some tips.

Finding the Best Infant Car Seat

Levi Quinn asked:

When one is driving to a place together with the children, the first thing that should be considered is safety for the infant. The most appropriate car seat for a child is the one that will fit the infant, requires simple installation, fits perfectly in the car and is very comfortable. This enables drivers to correctly use those seats and make wise selections according to their children’s specifications.

Immediately after getting the appropriate seats, drivers ought to start narrowing down the lists to the seats that have met all the mentioned features. They will additionally try out the seats to verify that they fit in their vehicles by getting them checked out and getting clues from seat compatibility databases. Getting in touch with Certified Child Passenger Safety staff databases so that they can examine the infant seats will assist in ensuring they are correctly installed. Moreover, they will access whether the drivers use those seats appropriately. The clues that car owners will get will provide information concerning seating positions which a bit challenging as much as usage and installation are concerned.

One of the most important vehicle accessories purchased by parents for their children must have lower anchors and tethers for children commonly referred to as LATCH SYSTEMS. The system will ensure that safety measures in seat installation are an easy task. The LATCH was invented by National Highway and Transportation and Safety Board after realizing that a great number of parents used wrong installation procedures, which later became compulsory in all newly manufactured vehicles after September 2000. Considering the car accessories are of numerous types, all drivers will have to make up their minds on whether they would prefer toddler/infant combos to car seats. The combos’ installation is done rear-facing for all infants and revolved round after the infant gets to be a year old and weighs twenty ponds. Moreover, parents must go through client reports for infant seat comparisons under all categories. This will enlighten them as to whether those seats have attained the requirements encompassed in the tests of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

In instances where drivers will claim that their babies unbuckle seats, better seats should replace those ‘unbuckled’ ones. By this, all drivers ought to purchase the infant seat prior to the birth of the babies. These seats have been made in such a way that they accommodate 9.1 kilograms. In installing those seats, the infants’ backs and heads should be securely cradled.  Seats like Snap-N-Go and Graco allow liftoffs that are tender for infants who are asleep.

After a year, passenger seats accommodating 40 pounds can replace the infant seats. Seats facing forwards and having 5-point harnesses observe safety and comfort in infants. They not only have locking mechanisms that children cannot unbuckle, but they also have trouble free installation procedures. To give their children a boost, a number of parents will purchase crème de la crème and Britax seats that are comfy. Others will however opt for the booster seats that are approved by the laws of various states for any child that is 27.2 kilograms or 60 pounds. These seats are preferable since they thread stranded seat belts via headrests or backs at infants’ heights. As a rule, both drivers and parents should do a lot of research before buying any car accessory for their young ones.

The Best Baby Stroller – What to Buy in the Stroller Jungle

Beatrice Stephenson asked:

When you’re about to buy a stroller for the first time, you feel like you’ve entered the world of rocket science: carrycot or seat; or both, foldable, aluminium, plastic; three wheeled or four wheeled; how the heck are you supposed to find out how to get a high quality, practical, safe and good looking stroller for your little one?

We took a good look around, talked to people who once where just as confused as us some time ago, and a brand that kept coming up was the Bugaboo Stroller. Yes, we’ve seen it in the tabloids, used by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Gwen Stephani, but what’s the little frog like stroller really about?

This is the stroller for the active parent, and yes, the parents using it swear by it. In the city, on the beach, in the woods, you will be able to use the Bugaboo everywhere. To find out ourselves we tried, and; yes, it can surely live up to it’s rumour. We took it on the subway through the city in a horrible rush hour, and later on to the beach. It was peace of cake; especially the beach part impressed, we didn’t struggle hard to move it around in the sand a all. It could easily be manoeuvred just about everywhere, since it’s light weight and the swivel like wheel makes it really easy to turn and walk with in any environment. Another feature we really liked was that you could move the seat or carrycot vertically; this means that you can set the seat in table-high position; very good if you are outside and want to sit down to feed or communicate with your baby. Or your toddler can participate sitting with you at the table in a cafe or restaurant.

The handle bar is adjustable, so when grandma or daddy is going for a walk with the baby they can adjust it to their own comfortable height. The seat and bassinet is reversible, so when the baby grows and wants to look around instead of facing you, it’s easy to turn around in one grip.

Some other features:

- The Carrycot is approved for use for overnight sleeping, good if you are on a trip.

- The Pushchair seat can be used as a seat on the floor or the ground as well.

-The under seat bag is big; good for shopping or storage.

-When the stroller is folded it takes up minimum space, it fits easily even in the smallest car.

-The seat frame is 2 inches longer so will fit for a longer baby and taller child.

So is this really the Rolls Royce of stroller some claim it to be? Yes, we really think it is. Is there a downside to it? Yes, the price. Takes a while to digest, but if we look upon it as the investment it really is, the price (about 900 $) is something to consider, because you won’t have to swap it for another on as the baby grows, it will grow with your child for as long as you need a stroller. And you will have a stroller for all of your kids, if there’s more to come!
